Plush doll with inner circuit and button
A plush doll based on Songbird, a character from the videogame Bioshock Infinite.
This is the original character in the videogame.
Materials that I use
While I was making it, I was having other ideas on what to use and what not to.
Fabrics per half meter:
- Crystal velvet, black color
- Jazz plastic, is like synthetic/fake skin, chocolate color
- Tergal or polyester fabric, black and dark brown color
- Polyester toy filling or pillow filling
To sew and knit:
- Worsted for knitting, gray color
- Thick sewing thread, black, brown and yellow color
For the ornaments and others:
- Small metal clips
- Small plastic hoops
- A small metal bell
- 2 boot laces
- 2 ball-shaped ornament LEDs (we are gonna need only the half of each)
- Old gold color spray paint
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Thin cardboard to make the molds
- Pencil, pen and a light color crayon
- Squares and ruler
- Exacto knife
For the circuits and electronics:
- 2 LEDs for the eyes
- 2 jumper cables
- Copper fabric
- 1 lithium button cell CR1225 3V
- Soldering iron and welding wire
Design Sketches
I wanted to make it in a minimalist style, since it was planned as a gift for my 8 year old niece.
Making process
So I started making the molds from each piece with cardboard.
.
Mark the molds of the torso/head, arms, legs and paws in the crystal velvet and in the black polyester, do it on the smooth side, make sure you have 1 piece of each part on these 2 fabrics, because the polyester or tergal will serve as an inner layer sewn to the crystal velvet.
Now, make another 2 paws, 2 arms and a back part of the doll that goes from the bottom to the head with the synthetic skin fabric, make sure they fit on each side, however you need to make these a little bigger, so that they can be sewn, since these are gonna be the parts that cover the crystal velvet parts.
As for the wings, make 1 side bigger with the synthetic skin fabric and a smaller one with the brown polyester
Sew the wings, arms and legs made of the crystal velvet/polyester to their corresponding parts made of polyester
Now you can sew the arms, legs and paws with the gray worsted, but before you close them, fill them with toy filling
For the eyes, use the half of the shaped ball plastic LEDs, inside them goes the LEDs
For the inner circuit, first I use silver thread but since it was too hard to keep it without making contact each other, I decided to use jumper cables
Now you can sew and fill the torso/head and sew the other parts, you can also add ornaments such as the painted clips, plastic hoops, the bell as a beak
